Dr. Leslie-Burl McLemore is a Walls native who graduated from Delta Center High School. As a student at Rust College, McLemore became very active in the civil rights movement, working alongside the likes of Fannie Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers and Bob Moses.

McLemore earned a master’s degree from Atlanta University, a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and completed postdoctoral study at Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University.

A retired political science college professor, McLemore spent most of his career at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss., where he served as interim president, department of political science founding chair and graduate school dean. McLemore’s background in political science served him well as he spent ten years on the Jackson City Council, including five years as council president and a stint as interim mayor.
